Suffragettes and Fallen Heroes

On Sunday 13th May 2018 many of Ashwell Theatre Club's members were involved in Ashwell At Home (the annual village event which shows Ashwell off at its best).

Marking 100 years since Women's Suffrage and 100 years since the end of WWI, ATC members were busying themselves as Suffragettes or honouring the 45 men of Ashwell who lost their lives in the Great War.

At 12.30pm many Suffragettes were found demonstrating outside the URC where they were heckled and supported in equal measure by passers-by. After reading some 'Mother Goose' poetry from the era to the gathered crowd, the Suffragettes marched through the High Street to St Mary's Church where a Suffragette 'meeting' took place. This involved ATC members performing speeches, readings, poetry and song lyrics to the audience.

At 2.30pm ATC members, this time 4 men and 1 woman, performed readings from the war consisting of letters sent home from soldiers on the front line and poetry. The emotional readings were interspersed with music played by Julia Mitchell on her harp.

All in all an emotional but wonderful day.
